Masirah Island — Wind & Monsoon Climatology

RAFO Masirah (OOMA / WMO 41288) at 20.675°N, 58.890°E, off Oman's east coast. Loading the station record…

Where it is

Masirah sits squarely in the path of the Findlater (Somali) Jet — the cross-equatorial low-level jet that drives Oman's southwest summer monsoon. The dashed line traces that flow up the Arabian Sea to the island.

Monthly wind climatology

Mean wind speed by month, in knots, with the 90th-percentile envelope. The May–September rise is the southwest monsoon; July is the peak. Winter (Oct–Mar) is calm by comparison.

Monsoon strength, year by year

Each point is one summer's mean monsoon-season (Jun–Sep) wind, coloured by the ENSO phase of that summer (NOAA ONI, Jun–Jul–Aug).

Cleaned climatology and the underlying figures.

Method. Source: NOAA Integrated Surface Database (ISD), station MASIRAH (USAF 412880 / WMO 41288). Wind speed converted to knots from ISD m/s×10 fields; obvious errors (>120 kt) dropped. Monsoon season = Jun–Sep (JJAS). ENSO phase assigned per summer from NOAA CPC ONI (JJA 3-month mean): El Niño ≥ +0.5 °C, La Niña ≤ −0.5 °C, else Neutral. ENSO composites use small samples (≈6 El Niño, 7 La Niña summers) — indicative, not significance-tested.
